June 5 is World Environment Day! This is when the world comes together to acknowledge and discuss how we can protect the plant. World Environment Day is an opportunity to shine a light on the important issues we face including:
-Climate Action
-Pollution Action
-Nature Protection
-Waste Reduction
At Good & Fugly, it’s no secret that we are on a mission to reduce waste in Australia, and be an example for other nations to do the same. Food waste in Australia is a growing problem, but there is a solution.
In Australia alone, we throw away 7.6 million tonnes of food. That’s 17,000 jumbo jets. In New South Wales, more than a third of the waste generated by households is food. Each year that adds up to nearly $4000 of food waste per household. But the problem doesn’t end there. There is significant waste occurring on farms as well. In fact, nearly 400,000 tonnes of produce is sent straight to landfill every single year.
What’s going on?
Firstly, supermarkets and grocery stores have certain standards of how fruit and veg should look. This includes the shape, the size, how many are in a bunch…that sort of thing. That means if the fruit and veg don’t meet those standards, it goes into the bin (even though we all know that beauty is skin-deep!) What a waste!
At Good & Fugly, we want to change the way we all look at fruit and veg. Goodness comes in all shapes and sizes, and it’s time to move away from outdated ideas that “looks matter” because we know for a fact that fugly is fabulous.
The other problem with waste in Australia is that a lot of food goes in the bin simply because households purchase too much. So, we got our top number-crunching team on the case and have taken the hard work out for you. Every Good & Fugly fruit and veg box has been portioned to suit your household.
Making a change can start with you, and this is an easy way to get started. Protecting the environment isn’t up to any one group or individual. It’s up to all of us. Governments, businesses, communities and individuals all need to play their part in making conscious, daily decisions to make positive changes.
This year, the 2022 World Environment Day theme is #OnlyOneEarth and calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet, so let’s get involved and start making a difference.
