Meal prep is one of the easiest ways to make sure you are maximising your weekly shop, saving money and time, eating well, and reducing waste. What’s not to love! On top of that, choosing a day to do your cook-up can become a fun household ritual.
How can you get your meal prep underway?
Start with simple recipes
The best way to get started is by choosing easy recipes that you know you can handle. Go for low fuss and tasty meals. Choose a selection of your favourite recipes, ideally, ones you can partially cook on your prep day or fully prepare and freeze. Stuck for recipe ideas? Check out the Good & Fugly recipe library that is packed with recipes like roast vegetable and lentil salad, roasted vegetable and kale lasagne and creamy eggplant and potato curry.
Prep your food
Preparing food on a Sunday for the week ahead is the key to becoming a meal prepping pro! All you’ll need is great storage containers and time. Cut up fruit and veg and store in the fridge so it’s ready to add to stir fry, salads, and other dishes during the week. Par cooking (half cooking) is a great way to half cook vegetables like potatoes. Boil the potato for 5- 7 minutes, cover, then pop in the fridge. Your par cooked potatoes are then ready to bake over the next couple of days, making meal time even easier and faster.
Batch cooking
Another great way to pre-prepare your meals is to batch cook. Cook enough for 2-3 lunches or dinners per recipe. Once the food has cooled, portion it out and freeze your meals. Freezing food means you can grab it during the week, heat it up and enjoy. Stews, soups, and bakes are all great options for batch cooking. Enjoy your ready-made meals with fresh side salads that you have cut up and stored already on your meal prep day – too easy!
Meal prepping can seem like a challenge if you haven’t done it before, but once you get into the swing of it, you’ll wonder why you haven’t been doing it all along. Ready to get started?
